Google Discover for Crypto: The Complete Optimization Playbook

Google Discover drives more traffic to crypto publications than traditional search for many sites — including publications I've managed. But optimizing for Discover requires a different mindset than standard SEO. Here's the complete playbook.

Understanding How Discover Differs from Search

Search responds to explicit queries — someone types "what is DeFi" and you rank for it. Discover proactively surfaces content to users based on their interests, browsing history, and engagement patterns. There's no keyword to "rank for." Instead, you're competing for attention in a personalized feed.

This means Discover rewards different signals: content freshness, visual quality, engagement metrics like click-through rate from the feed, and topical authority. Your site needs to be recognized as a trusted source on crypto topics before Discover will consistently surface your articles.

Image Requirements Are Non-Negotiable

Every article needs a featured image that's at least 1200 pixels wide. Discover strongly favors large images over thumbnails — Google's own documentation confirms this. Use 16:9 aspect ratio, ensure the image is genuinely relevant to the content, and set proper Open Graph image tags.

Custom graphics, branded chart visualizations, and editorial photography consistently outperform stock images in our testing. Invest in a simple Canva or Figma template system that lets writers produce quality visuals quickly.

Headline Engineering for the Feed

Discover headlines need to create genuine curiosity without crossing into clickbait — Google actively penalizes misleading headlines. The formula that works: lead with the impact or insight, be specific rather than vague, and avoid sensationalism.

Good: "Ethereum Layer 2 Fees Drop 90% After Dencun Upgrade — What It Means for DeFi." Bad: "You Won't Believe What Just Happened to Ethereum!" The first is specific and informative. The second is manipulative and will hurt your Discover eligibility over time.

Publication Cadence Matters

Discover's algorithm learns your publishing patterns. If you publish 5 articles daily for three months, then suddenly drop to 1 per week, Discover reduces how often it checks your site for new content. Consistency is more important than volume.

Find a sustainable cadence and stick to it. For a solo publication, 3-4 quality articles per week is better than 10 rushed ones. For a team publication, aim for consistent daily output with predictable timing.

Building Topical Authority

Discover surfaces content from sources it considers authoritative on specific topics. Build this authority through comprehensive topic coverage, consistent publishing over months, strong E-E-A-T signals on every page, and earning references from other authoritative sources in your niche.
